What fits a 5 to 8 tonne carrier
Auxiliary flow in this class typically runs 50 to 90 litres per minute at 150 to 180 bar. Variation between machines is significant, so check the carrier data plate, not the brochure.
- Montabert SD22: 4.5 to 9 tonne carriers. Comfortable in the lower half of this class. Better cycle rate than the SD28, lower impact energy per blow.
- Montabert SD28: 6 to 11 tonne carriers. The most common choice for general civil and demolition work in this band.
- Montabert SD36: 8 to 15 tonne carriers. Only for the upper edge with strong hydraulics. Punches above its weight on dense rock but will overpower a tired 7 tonne carrier.

Common pitfalls
- Buying for one job. A site's worst-case rock dictates breaker choice only if that material accounts for more than 30 percent of cycle time. Otherwise size for the average and move slower through the worst material.
- Not checking carrier hydraulic flow at operating temperature. Cold flow readings overstate real-world performance by 5 to 10 percent.
- Stepping up after a tool failure. A blunt tool feels like an underpowered breaker. Replace tools before sizing decisions.
